Title: Global Caries Epidemiology, New Approaches

Abstract:

Understanding of socioeconomic context and caries date might enable more efficient evidence-based preventive strategies in oral health.

Introduction:

Dental Caries as noncommunicable disease (NCD) shares with other NCD’s modifiable risk factors such as high sugar intake and poor health behaviour; its prevalence is strongly influenced by socioeconomic contexts. These determinants strongly influence stark oral health inequalities between and within countries, creating resource unavailability, patient vulnerability and poor accessibility to health care in underprivileged social groups. According to the conceptual theoretical framework proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO) Commission on social determinants of health, the macro-level context influencing health outcomes involves several items as follows: (1) governance, (2) macroeconomic policies, (3) social policies, (4) public policies, (5) cultural and social values, (6) epidemiological circumstances. The strong effect of macro-level socioeconomic contexts on the oral health of different age-groups suggests favouring upstream preventive oral health strategies in countries with economic grown difficulties.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Summarise the scientific evidence on caries epidemiology and prevention
  2. Recognize the different caries levels in different age groups.
  3. Estimate the caries progressive rate
  4. Illustrate the best preventive approach
  5. Predict the outcome of the new approach
