Can’t Miss Oral Lesions: An Interactive Virtual Session
Abstract:
Using a live online interactive platform (Poll Everywhere) this session will engage the audience in solving the mystery of oral clinical cases that must be diagnosed and managed urgently.
Introduction:
Potentially serious medical conditions can manifest with oral lesions that are readily detected by clinical examination. Dentists are therefore in an important position to be able to recognize concerning lesions and make timely and appropriate referrals. Dentists must be sufficiently familiar with a wide range of conditions that can present in the oral cavity, even those that are uncommon and rarely encountered in the general population. This session provides an in-depth exploration through a series of interactive cases that highlight the importance of good history taking and careful clinical examination for detecting important non-odontogenic conditions that a dentist simply can’t miss.
Learning Objectives:
- Obtain a chief complaint and pertinent medical history for oral medicine conditions.
- Perform a comprehensive extraoral and intraoral examination and describe findings.
- Develop a hierarchical differential diagnosis of oral medicine conditions based on history and clinical findings.
- Recognize and be able to describe orofacial “red flag” symptoms and clinical features.
- Understand the basic principles of management of urgent oral medicine conditions including how and where to refer.
